Hand therapy is concerned with the movement and function of the wrist and hand. There are many conditions for which hand therapy may be beneficial, including:
•Osteoarthritis
•Rheumatoid arthritis
•Post tendon injuries
•Post fractures
•Tendonitis
•Carpal tunnel syndrome
•Dupuytren’s disease
•Upper limb nerve compressions
•Trigger fingers
•Work related repetitive activity injuries
•Post hand/wrist surgery
Initial discussion/assessment
As a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists, Laura Gardner-Wedge is able to discuss the nature of your problem and with your consent, carry out a thorough examination in what is a very specialist area of physiotherapy. This will take between 45-60 minutes. We can then decide whether physiotherapy is appropriate and devise an individualised treatment plan.
Follow-up Treatment
At GW physiotherapy we are able to offer a custom splinting service for the treatment
of hand injuries – this is particularly appropriate/necessary in the recovery
from some forms of hand surgery. When required an assessment of the type, size
and shape of splint you require can be made and the
splint will then be made for you in house. Your care
will then continue making use of evidence based
treatment encompassing a wide range of techniques
including massage, mobilisations and therapeutic
exercise. Follow-up treatment sessions
will be 30-60 minutes as further splinting/revision of your
original splint may be required.
